Natural Soap vs Commercial Soap - 3 Reasons Why You Should Swap
What is natural soap?
Natural soap is that which is made from 100 percent natural ingredients such as plant oils, butter, plant extracts and exfoliates. These ingredients are genuinely good for your skin and overall health. Coconut oil, for example, has moisturizing and disinfectant properties. It contains vitamin E, which is essential for a healthy skin. Shea butter has skin healing properties and has been used ever since the days of ancient Egypt. When eucalyptus is added to the natural soap, then you have a product that has natural antibacterial properties.
1. Glycerin content
Glycerin is a natural skin moisturizer. It attracts water from the surrounding area and locks it in the skin. It is for this reason that it is highly prized in soaps, creams, and lotions for its ability to maintain skin moisture throughout the day. Vegetable oils used to make natural soap contain 7 to 13 percent glycerin as a natural part of their chemical makeup.
During the natural soap making process, vegetable oils and lye mix to form soap. Glycerin does not change during this process but settles in between soap molecules. A soap that contains too much glyceride is all mushy and disintegrates easily. A soap that contains too little glycerin is very harsh and only dries the skin.
Manufactured soap has all the glycerin removed for placing in other products such as creams and lotions. Unlike natural soap, this kind of product does not moisturize the skin on its own. Instead, it strips moisture from your skin, leaving it vulnerable to flaking and cracking. You, therefore, have to use products such as cream and lotions to moisturize your skin.
2. Use of fragrance
Natural soap contains no fragrance oils but is scented with pure essential oils. Using soaps scented with only essential oils benefit you for their lack of harmful chemicals. You also get the therapeutic properties of the essential oils. Again, the smell of the soap is just amazing.
Manufactured soaps, on the other hand, contain synthetic fragrance oils made of harmful chemicals. Your scented soap could, in essence, contain hundreds of harmful chemicals you do not know about. Some of these chemicals are known skin irritants and carcinogens.
3. How it is made
Natural soap is made using traditionally trusted methods: the cold or hot processes. In the first process, lye is mixed with water and blended with vegetable oils, essential oils, and natural colorants. The mixture is poured into molds to give it the desired shape in 24 hours. In the hot process, the liquid is placed in a heat source such as an oven and heated till it is cured.
Manufactured soap, on the other hand, is made on a large scale in factory lines with many people or robots. The soap mixture is blended with synthetic ingredients and foam enhancers such a Sodium Isethionate. Chemical solvents are also added before the soap mixture is formed into molds.
Natural soap is exactly what your body needs. Go for it!
